#08 Bulk AD rename

Bulk AD rename and move

Rename 200 PCs, move 1000 users to the right OU, apply naming conventions. Idempotent, with -WhatIf and CSV log.

Implementation: 1-2 hours per case 3 technologies
The pain

What it costs you today

In a firm with 1,800 users and 1,300 PCs split between home, office and branches, a disorganized AD shows up as 6 to 9 root OUs with 12 levels of depth, empty inherited OUs, PC names that do not respect any convention and duplicated security groups. The hidden cost is measured in hours: a dedicated admin spends 6 to 10 hours per week finding where an object is, reconciling permissions and rewriting scripts that assumed a different hierarchy. A migration to a new domain or a corporate merger multiplies the problem by 5: rename 200 PCs, move 800 users to the right OU and unify naming conventions. "The last attempt to reorganize AD was cancelled after 2 months" is the story of every mid-size firm. How much does it cost in team time to have a messy AD?

The value

What changes when you have it

On day one the team defines the target: canonical OU tree, naming convention for PCs, convention for groups, mapping of old to new OU. The idempotent script walks the objects in batches of 50, renames with -WhatIf first to validate, writes each change to a CSV with timestamp and operator, and notifies the end user if their machine was renamed. The owner is the infrastructure team, which delivers an ordered AD in a week of nightly runs. The visible output is the CSV of applied changes, the error report and the before/after OU tree. A multilatina across 4 countries consolidated 1,300 PCs and 1,800 users into 4 regional OUs in a week of nightly runs without downtime. The investment pays back with the first project that touches AD, typically 3 to 5 months.
